Holy cow! What an exciting final day at the KA Camp Cup! The Vampire Slayers have secured first place and a spot in the finals with two hard fought wins on the basketball court against the Post-Impressionists and Constructivists. Krishan Aghi controlled the post position with his aggressive and impressive play, and Spencer “the conquistador” Corpuz was great on the give-and-go, and played point with a level head and a keen eye. Asked about his team’s victory, Coach Zdon was quoted as saying, “I’m hungry.”

For a victory perhaps? But they will have to overcome the Modernists in the final game, who jumped two places in the standings to land in second place. Their two big wins on the soccer field came from an Albert “We Can Do It!” Cho goal and two goals from Spencer Koh, one of which was a spectacular heal-shot volley with his back turned to the goal against Surrealist captain Neville Eclov. Joshua Chan played strong on defense, and Graham Sarasy kicked butt and had a good head for positioning himself well.

The Constructivists with a win and loss tonight take third place, issuing tremendous defense from Nick the Lyonhearted, who had his best game of the season. The Larson-Cama duo was jiving nicely, and Alec “the bomber” Bronder worked the fast break for this hustling and defense-oriented team.

The Cubists tragically dropped two games tonight and fell out of second place down to fourth, but they played tough, with Noah Shenker intercepting passes and saving goals like a catcher in the rye. And then on the horizon, a savior appeared, or so they thought. Like a long lost cavalry, Ben Quazzo made a surprise appearance, but his mad skillz weren’t enough to give them a W in either game.

Rounding out the standings were the Post-Impressionists, who finished an impressive 4 – 2 in basketball, but couldn’t get any victories in soccer; the Surrealists, who played spoiler and had an absolutely huge win over the Cubists with a Alastair “the taxi” Louey goal which put the Modernists into the finals; and the Impressionists, who played amazingly well considering they were horribly under-coached. David Mwaura has, to his credit, absolutely secured the first pick in next season’s draft.

This is perhaps the most exciting KA Camp Cup in history. With only one day left to play, four teams are still in contention for first place. There are 112 permutations for determining who the two teams playing in the finals will be, far too numerous for us to go into detail here (see appendix). Essentially, the Vampire Slayers and the Cubists both control their own destinies, and the Constructivists and Modernists could easily make the finals with wins and a small amount of help. The Cubists-versus-Modernists soccer match-up, and the Slayers-versus-Constructivists contest in basketball are really the games to watch.

To recap the night’s highlights: in basketball news, the Surrealists picked up a rare win, thanks to the tough defensive play of Roarke Thornswood, among other contributions.

The Post-Impressionists won and lost won, issuing solid performances from Mitchell Stern, who rebounded fantastically, and the always dangerous Patrick Yew-ing.
Julian Moon played well for the Cubists, who won two tonight to move into a tie for the first-place spot with the Vampire Slayers. Ben Quazzo, who will be out tomorrow, dominated the court with his great shooting and ball handling. The Noah-to-Noah combo was working well, and everyone on the squad buckled down and played good D. It’ll be a real test for the Picassos to see if they can win enough to make the finals tomorrow without the help of the superstar Quazzo.

On the pitch, the Modernists spoiled the Vampire Slayers’ undefeated sports season once again! Just like last season, the Mod Squad stuck it to the immensely talented Slayers for a big win. Spencer Koh played tremendously (no surprise there), and Graham Sarasy came up with a few big steals on the basketball court.

The Constructivists’ Alec Bronder played brilliantly up front for the Red Wedge, not only making frequent and impressive runs for the goal, but also challenging his opponents’ defense to create additional opportunities. Bronder, the MVP of the day, scored on a elegant dribbling maneuver against a Slayer defender and then bent it around captain Billy Zdon. Zdon, in response to the goal, head-butted Bronder in the chest.

The Slayers came back, however, with an absolutely unbelievable goal form Brian “the dynamo” Ferguson, who took a high volley over the Constructivist defense and rocked it into the left upper 90.

The Impressionists played the Red Wedge for the tie, and got it thanks to the outstanding play of Emily Girl, who controlled the ball well in the midfield and made several threatening runs. Impressionist Brian Zhang also played his heart out, stealing the ball aptly and forcing several turnovers.

It’s as tight as ever here at the Cup — a big soccer day today, as the games Sunday were postponed due to extensive rioting. The All-Star game has been rescheduled to Thursday at 7:00pm. So with four games left in the regular season, the Cubists and the Constructivists are neck and neck for second place at 4 – 2 – 2. They tied today on the pitch in their first game. In game two, the Constructivists, who had yet to win a soccer match, defeated the Surrealists, who had yet to lose one. Center striker Alec Bronder scored two beauties in the Red Wedge’s shutout, and Jacob “the leprechaun” Knutson made a strong showing as well, both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Roman “the nobleman” Larson played sweeper with dignity and grace, allowing just one goal on the evening.

And that goal was scored by Ben Quazzo of the Cubists, who was magnificent as usual. He and Noah “the iceman” Friedman worked the Guernicattack with the precision of Spanish bombs in Andalucia, coming down in the days of ’39. After tying the Constructivists 1 - 1, they went on to beat the ever-dangerous Post-Impressionist outfit 1 – 0, in what sports analysts are calling “the game of the century.”

The Post-Impressionists fell from their second-place spot down to fifth with their two losses tonight. They outplayed the first-place Vampire Slayers in their opening game, but couldn’t manage to put the ball in the net. And then, with only eight seconds left on the clock, the Slayers scored on a beautiful cross by Riley Flood against the Post-Impressionists’ vaunted defense for the victory.

As a result, the Slayers have added another W to their undefeated season, as well as their third tie. Brian “the dynamo” Ferguson was all over the field, making plays left and right for his squad. But it was a team effort that kept the Vampire Slayers’ unblemished and well ahead in the Cup.

The Surrealists, missing team captain Neville Eclov, looked good on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Slayers to a 0 – 0 tie. Angel “the rainman” Uson looked impenetrable in the sweeper spot in the first game, and Roarke Thornswood held the team together from the right defensive midfielder position. Alastair “the taxi” Louey, Kevin “the goose” Lau, and Sanjay “the gangster” Srinivas worked the offensive strike with vigor but without, unfortunately, knocking one in the net.

The Impressionists’ Rohan Kulkarni controlled the ball spectacularly in the midfield for his team, passing, dribbling, shooting, and playing defense like Ronaldo before he got fat. They managed three goals but also gave up three in their tie with the Modernists.

The Mod Squad was able to eek a victory out of the Water Lilies on the basketball court, however, with the dynamic duo — Spencer Koh and Albert Cho — giving it their all. They Broadway Boogie-Woogies are still only 2 games out of first place, and just a half game out of the wild card race. Anything could happen in the final two days of the cup.

Things are heating up in the KA Camp Cup, as three teams are now tied for second place. The Post-Impressionists, after making a big trade for big man Eden “Godzilla” Adogla, won two basketball games tonight, eliciting tremendous play from power forward Jon Chin and center Patrick Yew-ing. Ben Yang, Chris Lu, and Mitchell Stern all also scored points for their squad, who are one of the teams now locked in the wild card race.

The Constructivists won one and lost one tonight, hustling amazingly on offense and playing their rough-and-tumble, smash-mouth defense, which has become a trademark of this Soviet-style outfit. Roman “the nobleman” Larson boxed out like he was born for the purpose, and Alec Bronder ran the fast break with finesse. But the real glue that holds the Red Wedge together is power forward Vitaliano Robert “the godfather” Cama, who broke up passes, rebounded, and ran the offense with tenacity and heart.

The Surrealists dropped two, but looked strong in their second game with great outside shooting from Sanjay Srinivas and Kevin “the goose” Lau. Jamie “the traitor” Shenk also looked good for her new squad.

The Modernists blew out the Surrealists in their first game, with Spencer “the fantastic” Koh draining bucket after bucket from the perimeter. Kirk Kim also played well underneath, but took himself out of the game against the Post-Impressionists due to a watch injury.

On the pitch, the Vampire Slayers were kept at bay with two ties, holding the ever-dangerous Cubists from scoring by loading the box and with Brian “the dynamo” Ferguson clearing well. Ali “the other traitor” Nahm dribbled well in the midfield and laced in some sweet passes to striker Riley “the rainstorm” Flood.

Impressionist captain David Mwaura hustled like a champion for his team, never ceasing to push the ball forward even with opposing players down from injury or after full time had been blow. It was this kind of play which earned the Impressionists their tie against the first-place Slayers, however against the Cubists, two own goals resulted in another tally in the team’s loss column. Brain Zhang was the real bright spot on the day for the Impressionists, passing beautifully and running interminably.

The Cubists are now the final second-place team, after collecting a win and tie tonight with great play from soccer superstar Ben “the Quiz” Quazzo. The Quiz utilized teammates Justin Chan and Noah Shenker, who look solid up front. But it’s a tight race for the wild card, with every team still in contention.

To Ithaca then.

And the great Odyssey that is KA Camp Cup lumbers on. On the basketball courts, the Cubists bounced back and won two. Ben Quazzo, after missing half of the first game due to tennis, came back and led his team to a come-from-behind win. They are now tied for third place.

But the team to beat is still the Vampire Slayers, who have tightened their stranglehold on first place with two blowouts tonight. Riley Flood played spectacularly, draining shots from the outside, and Krishan Aghi and the Conquistador Corpuz (playing injured) continued to improve on their already impressive abilities.

The Impressionists, tragically, dropped two more. Aaron “Mighty Mouse” Michaels made a bunch of shots, even while being double and triple teamed.

The Surrealists, after winning day one in soccer, hopped on the bus and went to basketball school. Kevin “the goose” Lau provides hope for his outfit; with an excellent head for the game, this talented ball-handler made some plays for his team.

On the pitch, the Mod Squad rolled to an easy victory over the previously tied-up Post-Impressionists. Striker Graham Sarasy is starting to add to an already explosive offense, complementing well the tremendous play of Spencer Koh, who scored an amazing, volleying goal in the Modernists’ first game. Shing Him “Shing” Liu was in the right place at the right time for De Stijl’s other two goals, including the lone goal in their victory over the no-longer-undefeated Constructivists, and Albert “We Can Do It!” Cho managed the ball well in the midfield.

Patrick Yew-ing of the Post-Impressionists continues to play impressively, but even working the one-two with Jon Chin couldn’t give them a win. Captain Doug Morrison also had more headers than anyone could possibly count.

The Red Wedge, after acquiring free agents Jamie Shenk and Ali “the flash” Nahm, looked solid on the pitch, although they could not muster enough firepower for a win. Nahm, however, did score one to tie the Post-Impressionists, and had a heap of other vicious attempts. The godfather Cama crossed well for the Constructivists, and Nick Lyon had several barely missed opportunities. But the standings have tightened up in the middle, and the rest of the cup looks to be a real wild ride. To Ithaca, my friends, to Ithaca.

The KA Camp Cup opened today with vim and vigor. The team to beat this season: the Vampire Slayers. Starting out strong with two big wins on the basketball court, the Slayers seem to have transitioned from last season’s super-star/role-player model into a more balanced team, with each member contributing in important ways. Nick “the wizard” Ahn handled the ball well and sunk some buckets, Krishan Aghi played big underneath, and Spencer “the conquistador” Corpuz, after injuring his ankle in the first game, rebounded well and shot beautifully from the outside. Coach and captain Billy Zdon came of the disabled list for the game and aptly collected numerous rebounds. No head-butts were reported.

The Constructivists, after winning it all last season, have started off 2 - 0 once again, mainly because of some all-around good defense, abundant passing, tough rebounding, and bit of hustle. Roman “the nobleman” Larson, Alec Bronder, and Vitaliano Roberto “the godfather” Cama worked the triangular and fast break passing patterns well in their nitty-gritty offensive attack.

Team captain and coach of the Modernists, Jason Hopper, after being handed two tough losses tonight, plans to take a more authoritarian approach and coaching style; center Kirk Kim was benched after rough play in the second game. Spencer Koh’s tough play was the only bright spot for the Mod Squad tonight.

Ben Quazzo was the high scorer on the day in basketball, captaining the talent-packed Cubist company, but unfortunately coming up short in the win column. Teammates Justin Chan and Julian “blood red” Moon looked good on the offensive side of ball, and the Cubists are sure to be a major threat on the pitch.

In soccer news, Patrick Yew-“ing” of the Post-Impressionists could be the savior for a team that last season seemed to be missing an ear, so to speak. Yewing scored all three goals in the Van Gogh-Goghs’ two ties. The Impressionist defense smartly pushed Yewing to the outside to minimize his impact, and many of the Impressionists’ outfit came through in the game against their big rivals, the Post-Impressionists.

In the Post-Impressionists’ game with the Surrealists, Jon Chin was all over the place, busting his chops to get back on defense and make big plays, and Jeffrey “King” Kwong stepped up and challenged the Surrealists’ big men, helping his team match up well with some robust opponents.

The Surrealists, coming off a rough season, are off to an excellent start with their win and tie. Kevin Lau scored the Surrealists’ only goal in their victory over the Impressionists, and Sanjay Srinivas scored one in the tie with the Post-Impressionists. Srinivas, Lau, as well as Alastair “the taxi” Louey were all good up front, and Roake Thornswood headed the Surrealists’ fierce resistance on the defensive side of the ball. At this point, it could be anyone’s cup.
