The KA Camp Cup opened today with vim and vigor. The team to beat this season: the Vampire Slayers. Starting out strong with two big wins on the basketball court, the Slayers seem to have transitioned from last season’s super-star/role-player model into a more balanced team, with each member contributing in important ways. Nick “the wizard” Ahn handled the ball well and sunk some buckets, Krishan Aghi played big underneath, and Spencer “the conquistador” Corpuz, after injuring his ankle in the first game, rebounded well and shot beautifully from the outside. Coach and captain Billy Zdon came of the disabled list for the game and aptly collected numerous rebounds. No head-butts were reported.
The Constructivists, after winning it all last season, have started off 2 - 0 once again, mainly because of some all-around good defense, abundant passing, tough rebounding, and bit of hustle. Roman “the nobleman” Larson, Alec Bronder, and Vitaliano Roberto “the godfather” Cama worked the triangular and fast break passing patterns well in their nitty-gritty offensive attack.
Team captain and coach of the Modernists, Jason Hopper, after being handed two tough losses tonight, plans to take a more authoritarian approach and coaching style; center Kirk Kim was benched after rough play in the second game. Spencer Koh’s tough play was the only bright spot for the Mod Squad tonight.
Ben Quazzo was the high scorer on the day in basketball, captaining the talent-packed Cubist company, but unfortunately coming up short in the win column. Teammates Justin Chan and Julian “blood red” Moon looked good on the offensive side of ball, and the Cubists are sure to be a major threat on the pitch.
In soccer news, Patrick Yew-“ing” of the Post-Impressionists could be the savior for a team that last season seemed to be missing an ear, so to speak. Yewing scored all three goals in the Van Gogh-Goghs’ two ties. The Impressionist defense smartly pushed Yewing to the outside to minimize his impact, and many of the Impressionists’ outfit came through in the game against their big rivals, the Post-Impressionists.
In the Post-Impressionists’ game with the Surrealists, Jon Chin was all over the place, busting his chops to get back on defense and make big plays, and Jeffrey “King” Kwong stepped up and challenged the Surrealists’ big men, helping his team match up well with some robust opponents.
The Surrealists, coming off a rough season, are off to an excellent start with their win and tie. Kevin Lau scored the Surrealists’ only goal in their victory over the Impressionists, and Sanjay Srinivas scored one in the tie with the Post-Impressionists. Srinivas, Lau, as well as Alastair “the taxi” Louey were all good up front, and Roake Thornswood headed the Surrealists’ fierce resistance on the defensive side of the ball. At this point, it could be anyone’s cup.
